Cluj-Napoca – East & Opera Area

We continue in this article our journey through the eastern part of Cluj, around the Opera Place.

This is the Teacher’s House in Cipariu Square, built in 1902. It now hosts the Cluj-Napoca Trade Register.

And these are the former St. George Military Barracks, built in 1834. Now it’s a military base, home for the 4th Gemini Infantry Division. Also, it hosts the Military Museum.

The Palace of Justice of Cluj, built in 1898 in the eclectic style. It hosts the Court of Appeal and the other 2 lesser courts of Cluj.

Next to the Court is the Opera and the National Theatre, built in 1804.

The National Theatre and the Opera share the same building.

Facing the Opera is the Orthodox Cathedral and the Avram Iancu Park.

The Dormition of the Mother of God Orthodox Cathedral was built in 1933.

The cathedral is a huge building.

Although not particularly nice.

The statue of Avram Iancu in the middle of the park bearing the same name.

A different perspective.

This used to be a singing water fountain during my last years in Cluj, a show of color and classical music.

The former Financial Directorate, built in 1880. Now it’s the Public Finance Administration of Cluj-Napoca.

The former Forest Administration, built in 1887, now the Orthodox Archdiocese and the Orthodox Theological Seminary of Cluj-Napoca.

Farther along the square it’s the Palace of the Transylvanian Hungarian Public Cultural Association (EMKE), built in 1890. Nowadays it’s the Romanian State Railways (CFR), the Romanian railroads regional office of Cluj (in Romanian, Regionala CFR).

Crossing the road near the CFR Palace, looking towards the Calvinist Parish, built in 1872.

Turning backwards, we see again the Regionala CFR building from the other side.

This is the Lower Town Reformed Church or the Two-Towers Church, built in 1829.

The view of the Opera square from the Prefecture of Cluj, with the Two-Towers Church in the center and the Regionala CFR to the right.

The former Farmers’ Credit Cooperative of Cluj, built in 1897.

Another view of the same building.
