Eugène Sue & Annecy

Eugène Sue is a writer known in my home country for his novel The Mysteries of Paris. I was surprised to find out that he died in Annecy in 1857 and is buried in the local Loverchy graveyard. So I went to take some photos. What was also surprising was the fact that nobody at my workplace ever heard of him, so when I explained that his resting place is in Annecy, they didn’t know who I was talking about… This comes after the fact that I asked and nobody knows that the first Carrefour supermarket was opened in Annecy…

The grave stone is very simple. There is no indication at the entrance of the cemetery about the exact location, so I had to search and guess. In the background there is something that must be a military grave, as there are several similar crosses lined nearby.

There is no explanation and no educational banner or a distinctive sign; it’s just a simple stone. No mention beyond his name and the years of birth and death. Well…
